Welcome
to Peawanuck!
The
community of Peawanuck is situated on the coast of Hudson Bay, west
of James Bay, 20 miles inland on the Winisk River. It is the gateway
for Polar Bear Provincial Park - Ontario's largest wilderness park.
The
community is relatively new having replaced the former community
of Winisk (located downstream) that was destroyed by flooding during
the river ice breakup in 1986.
The
new town has a population of 300 people of mainly Cree First Nation
descent whose ancestors have lived on the land in this region for
over 3000 years.
Local
Activities
During
your visit to the area you will have the opportunity to mingle with
the friendly people of Peawanuck as they go about their daily and
seasonal activities.
While
modern technology is used today, many local activities have not
changed from the traditional ways of the past. This is especially
true in the preparation of wild game and food.
Join
in as local dishes such as Atik minwan (caribou steak dinner), Abon
(roasted goose), Bannock (baked bread), Papatay (meat & dumpling
stew) are prepared. Learn how wild meat and fish is harvested and
hunted and smoked in teepees and prepared in the traditional ways
also.
You
may also sit in on local activities that include ceremonial feasts,
picnics and cookouts where you will learn of our elders history,
stories and legends. Visit the medicinal sweat lodge and traditional
harvesting camp.
You
will also learn about the structure and history of the Cree language
and will hopefully speak some of our language to remember when you
return home.
Shopping
Depending on availability you will also have the opportunity to
shop for handicrafts created by local artisans which include: moccasins,
slippers, gloves, mittens and other clothing along with artwork
such as tamarack geese, stone carvings, sculptures and paintings.
